Our Responsibility

Hand tended & Locally grown

At Hell or High Water Farm our work is grounded in a deep respect for our natural world and all the creatures in it. We believe it is our responsibility as farmers to foster sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices as stewards of the land and our community.

We grow vegetables and flowers using certified organic, non-GMO seeds. We focus heavily on heirloom varieties and are proud to source many of our seeds from Pacific Northwest farm based seed companies such as Uprising Seeds, Adaptive Seeds, and Wild Garden Seed. Varieties that cannot be sourced locally are purchased through Johnny's Selected Seeds in Maine or High Mowing Seeds in Vermont. We avoid growing crops which require plastic packaging such as salad mix and other frequently bagged items in favor for small lettuce heads that can be prepared at home without the waste of single use plastic. All the packaging we use for our vegetables and flowers may be reused, composted or recycled.

We utilize organic practices which regenerate soils and improve mycorrhizal growth below the surface. We utilize chicken manure and locally sourced organic soil amendments to ensure soil fertility. We strongly oppose the use of petroleum based fertilizers and synthetic pesticides. We attract beneficial insects such as ladybugs, preying mantis, and lacewings with plantings of flowers and herbs. Our growing practices are informed by the works of Eliot Coleman, Jean-Martin Fortier, and Steve Soloman.

We use only ethical animal husbandry practices. We believe firmly that all creatures have a right to sun, fresh grass, and the freedom to engage in behaviors which are innate to their species. We strongly oppose the use of confinement systems for poultry or other domesticated farm animals. We utilize mobile chicken tractors and solar powered electric fencing, providing our flocks safe access to pasture from sunrise to sunset. In 2019, with the support of the FACT: Food Animal Concern Trust, we welcomed two Great Pyrenees, Lucky and Rosebud, to our farm to train as livestock guardian dogs to protect our hens from significant predator pressure. We use no antibiotics and keep our flocks healthy through preventative, organic methods. Our chickens forage in organically managed pastures and consume a mix of native grasses and legumes. We supplement our chicken's nutrition with non-GMO, raw whole grains, grown and milled in Washington state. While we utilize organic practices, our farm products are not certified organic at this time.
The only truly dependable production technologies are those that are sustainable over the long term. By that very definition, they must avoid erosion, pollution, environmental degradation, and resource waste. Any rational food-production system will emphasize the well-being of the soil-air-water biosphere, the creatures which inhabit it, and the human beings who depend upon it." ―Eliot Coleman
